Which leads me to the opinion that whenever I am in a big box store and they are loading or unloading anything from the high pallet shelves I am going to go far, far away.

Man, I've seen some of those before. I'm kinda surprised pallet racking is OSHA-approved. Seems like a house of cards.

Just like many things, they are fine until the structural integrity is compromised, then all bets are off. There can be LOTS of weight on those. They are all connected together. When one gives, it will just start pulling the rest down. It's a chain reaction.
