Coating for EPS foam stones

I'm making stone steps with eps foam applied to stock wooden stairs. What's a good, *cheap* protective finish?
We're concerned about actors hitting/kicking the foam.

Look up VSSSD here.

But how about flame resistance? A homemade mixture might be effective for that, but I haven't met a fire marshal who would okay it. Rosco Foam Coat is the off the shelf option having a flame cert.

I like to use a paint-dipped gauze or cheesecloth to coat foam stone. It adds a bit of texture and protects against moderate wear. It won't survive a sharp gouge, but it will prevent chips breaking off, protect against accidental kicks, etc. My go-to is tobacco cloth from SSSL, but any natural fiber gauze will work.

We often use a product called Akroflex. It's used in construction applications where they're stealing our techniques and using carved foam for architectural details. Heathens. I think we pay $8/gal or so.
