graveyard scene, Addams Family

I am creating a graveyard scene for the Addams Family. Our Pit is part of the graveyard off stage right. I am looking for ground cover for the area... clumps of brush and patches of weeds. I will have low lying fog intermittently during the show in the pit as well that will help mask some of the elements but I am trying to make it look as realistic as possible during the pre-show. Audience will be quite close to the scene. any suggestions as to what might read the best?

I like to use erosion cloth for this type of effect. For example, this or this. You can combine that with camo netting and some fake flowers/greenery for a nice, creepy-realistic foliage look.

If you want to make some fake tree roots "Great Stuff" works really good for that.

Just make sure to treat that erosion cloth with flame retardant! That stuff looks fantastic, but it can catch fire extremely easily.

Great Stuff is also pretty flammable, unless you get the kind meant for fireplaces.
