Moving head for HS

Ok, so we decided to go with the moving lights and I am going to run the cable back to our express board from the stage. Since it was suggested not to use microphone cable I am looking at DMX cables. Since the outputs are 3pin DMX and the board is 5 pin, can I use long 3 pin DMX cable to get it to the board and then change it to 5 pin before it goes into the express board?

Yes, that is fine as long it actually DMX compliant three pin. You can make your adapter from the same cable, you are only use three pins anyway.
