Preferred pipe size for drops, scrim

1/2" black pipe will be fine for both. I've seen 3/4" used, and don't remember ever seeing anyone using anything bigger.

Black pipe works great also. The EMT is an off the shelf solution as it comes in ten foot sticks, has threads on both ends, and each stick comes with a coupling that is much smaller than a normal one

I've used 3/4" black. We cut and threaded it ourselves in 10' sections.

1/2" (sometimes 3/4") black pipe is pretty standard. However, we often use 1" sq tube (.065) in 10' sections, with a splice of 1/2" black pipe. The splice is spot welded into one end of the square tube, with 12" or so protruding. Then we sleeve that into the next piece, and just wrap a piece of gaff around the joint. No chance of snagging and tearing your pipe pocket, and we've not had a problem feeding them back out.
