Design Starting the Design Process

As you can tell, I work primarily as a stage manager. However, we are going to be getting started with AIDA shortly and I am extremely interested in the lighting design aspect for some reason. So just out of curiosity, how do you start to design lights for a show? Do you sketch? Just create a plot? Overall, I'm talking about your intial ideas and plans in your head. Thanks!
