Virtual Moduling Programs

I think that really depends on your background/training, your platform, and what you are looking for in your final rendering. Vectorworks, AutoCAD work fine for rough sketches and will run on just about anything. SketchUp has a simple interface and anyone can be 3D modeling within 5 minutes, but it's PR rendering is poo-poo unless you spring for Podium and then it's only ok. Kerkythea is a free rendering engine that works wih many formats of input and it has some really nice results especially for the price. Some of the best results I've seen were obtained with Rhino.

Have you looked at Capture Polar? (www.capturesweden.com) They offer several "editions" from their free Student Edition to the Extended Edition. It's relatively easy to use and you can control your simulations in real time.
