Couch Cushion

Two questions in this thread...

1. Which department does the role of furniture building fall to at your company?

2. I'm building a modular couch for our upcoming production of La Cage. I'm building this thing from scratch and am having a problem coming up with a cheap solution for building the seat and back cushions. Standard cushions aren't the right size, and a 5" roll of upholstery foam runs about $100 for 2'x8'. I'd need about 4 rolls and thats way out of my budget for this piece. I've considered buying 1" rolls and wrapping it around 2 layers of 2" pink foam before inserting it into the cushion cover. It will be really solid to sit on but a lot cheaper to make. Anyone have any suggestions for a cheap way to make a cushion?

The photo is what's done so far, the corner bits still need upholstery.

You could make the cushions out of a 1x4 frame with jute webbing basket-woven over it, and then with a layer of 1 or 2" foam.

That said, the majority of couch cushions that I see are made with fiberfill or batting rather than foam.

either batting or fiberfill, should be cheaper and still give the nice squishy feel, is this going to tour and how long does it need to last?

Lastly it depends on who moves it. Technically its a props thing but if its a set piece that is only sat on by actors but not moved I could see it in carps.
