Does anyone know which lights could have been used here?

Hi,

Can anyone suggest which lights were used to create the stormy clouds and lightning effects outside the windows in Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris? It's pretty effective.

The close-up makes it look like the clouds are just a fog machine on the left of the window with a fan on the right side to create directional suction.

The lightening could be any LED pattern projector or discharge light with a mechanical shutter. The flashes appear too instantly to be an incandescent source.

Thanks for your reply!
I'm not so sure about it being a fog machine. I've seen the effect in person and it's definitely being projected. The second video may help clarify it.

I suspected it may have been some GAM Film. Of course, the problem with using GAM Film is that the loop finishes after some time and everything would have to be reset. You'd expect them to have chosen a fixture which would run on continuously.
It could always be some VSFX Disks, but the movement of the clouds seems to be too horizontal for that.
Here are some photos to clarify:

Can anyone explain how the GAM SX4 actually works? Does the film reach an end and then need to be reset or does it essentially rotate back in front of the Source 4?

I dont know the actual way they do it in the video but my thought would be that there are 2 or more source 4 with the GAM SX4. One fixture would be at full and go through the film when it reaches the end it fades out and resets wile the other fixture is brought up and goes through the film.

If you look closely, you can see that the clouds go in both directions. From what I've just read online and the demos I've seen, I think the SX4 loops the film in front of the Source 4, so there is no need to reset everything.

I presume they would use a product from rosco or GAM. Probably an ETC source4 for the lights. Heres a idea of how they might of used lighting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLxEBPDiiHg&list=TLBxgw6shWHZ0 - Having one light with a "Lighting" Gobo in that went to a random intensity every few seconds.
The clouds can be done two ways. 1) With a image projector or moving head (Something like the digitalspot 7000 dt)that projects the video of moving clouds onto the Background. Or 2) Using something like the GAM Film|FX. They have cloud designs that you can use.

You'd be surprised at how much Disney uses projection for things like this...from small projectors shooting video loops inside windows to large scale openings.

It's much easier to re-render a video loop with custom clouds and lightning for a show director than it is to change a film loop, film disc, gobo, etc.
