Dmx Sound Controlled lights

Hello,
I am running an ETC Smartfade lighting board with a midi in and out on the back I have three colored lights that I would like to be sound controlled but I want the rest to be manual. I was thinking of a 3.5mm Audio Jack to MIDI converter would that work if so how would I program the board to do that, the lights are on 6,10,11. If there is another way I need to know asap! thank you!

Hi Keltontheboss,

The SmartFade console does not have native audio response functionality. You could use an external MIDI interface to respond to audio levels, but that interface would need to be programmable to send the MIDI commands outlined on pages 26-28 of the SmartFade User Manual. The commands you would likely be most interested in implementing would be the Note On/Off commands for controlling memory bump buttons. You would also need to record memories for each of the lights that you want to control and have the console in memory mode for the console to be able to listen to the commands from the MIDI interface.

You might want to look into midi clock which is essentially the beat of a song. Programs such as virtual DJ can output it. You can use a USB to MIDI interface to send the midi clock signal to your lighting console.
