Concentric ring vs standard top hat

My understand is that concentric rings help reduce lens flair if the fixture is within sight lines, and can do the lob of a 6" top hat with less length. They can also reduce output on medium and wide throw lenses. Never actually used them in a design, so someone else will have to confirm.

On paper they do the same thing from a geometry standpoint; the rings simply doing it in a shallower device. Rings = top hat (blades that are parallel to the source) cut down on beam spread.

Those quartered baffles (blades that are perpendicular to the source) are not intended to effect the beam spread but simply reduce glare (though, naturally they'll have a bit of a top hat effect due to the nature of the device).

Eggcrates are a combination of the two - shallow profile, reduces glare, and cuts down on beam spread.
